5 Tips to Achieve Your New Year’s Fitness Goals

It’s that time of year again…time to focus on your New Year’s resolutions. Many people begin an exercise program, but abandon it before Easter. However, you can increase your chances for long-term success if you follow these five simple tips to achieve your fitness goals.

Determine Your Readiness

Make sure you’re both physically and mentally ready to start an exercise program. Tell your doctor you want to begin a fitness regimen and you want to make sure you’re healthy enough to start. Once you have been physically cleared to proceed, consider your mental readiness. How likely are you to stick with an exercise program once you begin? While there are many factors to consider, three are most significant.

You are more likely to succeed if you:

Create a Plan

Before you start your exercise program, answer three questions. First, when will you exercise? Identify three days and times that are convenient for you and stick with those days so you are working out at the same time each week.  Second, what type of exercise will you do? The best type of exercise is one you enjoy. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing; pick an exercise that works for you. Choose from activities such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, weightlifting, skating, dancing, golf, handball, tennis and basketball. Third, how much time will you spend exercising? Start with as little as 10 minutes per session and slowly build up to at least 30 minutes per workout.

Bring a Friend

You may know someone who resolved to start exercising in the New Year. Begin your fitness journey together. It will increase your chances for success and you’ll have more fun. For this to work, you have to find an exercise that both of you enjoy. This might be a challenge, but it’s worth it since an exercise partner provides you with a support system, a positive social experience and inspiration. There will be times when you don’t feel like working out and a partner can be just the motivation you need to get going.

Take It Easy

Think of your resolution as a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You are much more likely to be successful if you take it easy at the beginning. For instance, you may see people exercising at a very high intensity, but you should start with low-to-moderate intensity workouts. You may know people who train six days a week, but it’s fine to start with three. You may see people engage in a diverse array of physical activities, but a 15-minute walk three days a week is a great place to begin.

Be Realistic

One of the biggest problems with New Year’s resolutions is they can be extremely impractical. Setting goals is a great idea, but make sure they are realistic and feasible. For example, a goal to lose 12 lbs by Easter is both reasonable and achievable. So is a goal to complete a 5K run by tax day. Conversely, a goal to complete a marathon by that date is unrealistic and potentially unsafe for newbie runners. Think of it as if you were building a house. Start slow (i.e., low intensity and duration), develop a solid foundation of fitness and then build upon that foundation as your fitness improves.

The classes were a lot of fun with the people and the change in routine every time. Scott is great at mixing together cardio, strength training, endurance, you name it. I was a 20-year “desk jockey” used to long hours at work and very little self-care. After not working-out in 4 years (and surviving a cancer diagnosis) I was extremely nervous to jump into any exercise routine. After not working-out in 4 years (and surviving a cancer diagnosis) I was extremely nervous to jump into any exercise routine. When Scott Harwood’s small group personal training classes were recommended to me it seems like a great fit. When I reached out to Scott he immediately put me at ease. He listened to my concerns around my perceived physical limitations, understood where I was coming from and at every turn he challenged me to do better than the day before. I haven’t repeated a workout in the two months I’ve been going to class which helps keep boredom at bay. He saw what I was capable of and encouraged me to bust through the stale limitations I’ve been living with for years – and for that Scott, I thank you. He has compassion, will hold you accountable and will show you that you’re capable of so much more then you think! Do yourself a favor and CALL HIM!

Scott’s boot camp is great and very affordable. I’ve been going for four years. You will start feeling a difference after three classes. Every day the workout is different so you won’t get bored doing the same thing.

Fitness Classes Denver 80202

I LOVE this boot camp. I have been going 2-3 times a week for 3 months now and I feel a huge difference. It used to be hard for me to do one push-up, last night I did 15 easily.
Scott is really great at motivating you and letting you do things at your own pace. I highly recommend this for anyone that feels like they need help or an extra little push

I’ve been attending Scott’s Denver Boot Camp for about a year now, and I love it!  I saw a change in my body almost immediately.  The ever-changing fast-paced workouts never disappoint, and the hour goes by very quickly.  I attend boot camp classes as well as group training, and coming from someone that didn’t work out very much at all before the past year, that says a lot about Scott and his workouts.

I would recommend Scott’s Denver Boot Camp to anyone of any age or fitness level!  You’ll be looking and feeling great in no time 🙂

I never thought working out during my lunch break would give me energy to continue and finish my day. I’ve always wanted to work out but with my busy schedule I never found time. Our boss let us know we were starting a wellness program at work. Meeting Trainer Scott was exciting, a little nervous but I knew I was ready to workout. I let Scott know how busy my schedule is and that if he can show me to get a good workout during my lunch hour, he said yes, we can do a good 20 minute work out and you still have time to eat your lunch. I thought to myself, 20 minutes? No way! We started slow but Scott has a good eye when comes down to everyone’s individual strength and stamina. I never thought I could push myself or even feel energized after working out. I actually felt calm, centered and more focused after my work out.

I was nervous when I started the class because I hadn’t had a regular workout routine in a while before joining, but my fears were put to ease when I started. While I found the workouts difficult, they were not overwhelming and I noticed a lot of improvement in a short amount of time which was very gratifying. The variety of workouts kept me motivated; before joining Scott’s boot camp I could never work out regularly for more than a month because I’d lose interest.

My sister invited me to joining this boot camp with her. I’m very glad I listened to her! We ended up enjoying it so much that our brother decided to join as well. The other people in the class are great too. I found the environment very supportive, which just pushed me that much more to better myself.

I found the boot camp schedule very convenient. Since it’s offered at different times 5 days a week, I could easily show up a few times a week without having it interfere with the rest of my schedule.

I’d highly recommend Scott’s boot camp to anyone. Scott is a great trainer and the workouts and other people in the class are great!
